Where to Find Tons of Tasty Tacos in Delco

Taco lovers, you’re in luck! There is an abundance of fantastic spots to fill your Mexican and Tex-Mex food cravings in Delco. We’re talking restaurants, fast-casual takeout spots, bars — even food trucks — where you can indulge in these humble handheld delights. 

Some skew more traditional, with corn tortillas heaped with meat or veggies and simple toppings, like cilantro, radishes and onions. Others take a new-school approach, fusing flavors from different cuisines and getting creative with proteins and toppings. At many of these places, you can explore other dishes in the taco family, like burritos, enchiladas and nachos. Mexican and Mexican-inspired food is such a vibrant part of Delco’s restaurant community! 

So, whether it’s Taco Tuesday, or any day of the week, here are some suggestions of where to find great tacos in Delco:

 

The Tattooed Pig

Husband and wife team, Chef Floyd and Angie Kahlil call their style “Tex-Mex with soul.” Their inspiring story is as much of that soul as are the menu items. Tex-Mex is traditionally a little bit of Texan cuisine mixed with Mexican cuisine, and this joint delivers. There are three taco styles to dress up your favorite protein: Street tacos keep it simple with onions, cilantro and a fresh lime wedge; Texas tacos are covered in housemate apple slaw and barbecue sauce; and Cali tacos are topped with lettuce, tomato and cheese. If you’re bringing a big appetite, try the Birria tacos, with saucy braised beef or smoked chicken wrapped in grilled corn tortillas (which were dipped in beef sauce), filled with cheese and served with more sauce for dipping. It’s truly a feast for the senses!

Duo Tacos and Bowls

Roland and Lucia Taylor opened this Afro-Mex taco joint on Chester’s Avenue of the States (just down the block from Penn Cafe) in the Spring of 2022. Right away, Duo Tacos became known for its crave-worthy birria ramen bowls and toppings-loaded Mexican street corn. But no visit is complete without at least one order of Duo’s uber-cheesy chicken birria tacos, served with onion-cilantro consomme for dipping. Other menu standouts include the blackened salmon tacos with purple cabbage slaw and cotija cheese, and the vegan mushroom tacos; you can mix and match taco styles in your order. Head over on Taco Tuesday to enjoy $3 tacos, ideally enjoyed outside on one of the colorful, sun-drenched picnic tables.

Los Machetes Authentic Mexican Restaurant

Currently the best deal around, tacos are just a buck on Tuesdays! That falls into the “enough said” category, but it’s our obligation to point out that among the Taco Tuesday favorites are al pastor — spicy marinated pork with pineapple — and tinga — shredded chicken. Tacos are topped with cilantro and onions, and come with radish, lime, grilled jalapeño and roasted tender cactus. This is a great place for weeknight takeout, or dine in  to enjoy the colorful decor and pair your tacos with a Mexican Coke or a glass of Jamaica (fresh hibiscus tea).

Rey Azteca Mexican Restaurant

This is taco central. You’ll find them a la carte, on the children’s menu, as part of combo meals and lunch specials, and as salads and sides. Did we mention there’s also a dedicated taco portion of the menu, too? Check it out for the tacos de carne asada, grilled steak strips and onions served with Spanish rice, refried beans and house-made salsa. Open Monday through Saturday from noon to 9 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 8 p.m. Call to reserve indoor and outdoor dining. You can call ahead for or order takeout online. Bonus: Delivery is available through DoorDash.

Yosemite Burrito

Sure, it has “burrito” in its name, but this fast-casual, build-your-own taco joint on Springfield’s charming Saxer Avenue sure does tacos right. This is the perfect place if you have a taco vision that you want to turn into a reality! Every order begins with choosing a base; if you’re going the taco route, the options are soft flour tortillas or crispy hard shell corn tortillas. Then, pick a protein, with classics like ground beef and marinated chicken, traditional options like al pastor and chorizo, and lighter fare like vegetarian Impossible “meat” and battered cod filet. The toppings are where things really get fun! Try one of four different salsas, black or pinto beans, two kinds of crema, multiple kinds of cheese and, of course, fresh guacamole! Yosemite also has plenty of signature tacos on offer if you want to leave it to the experts.

Al Pastor Havertown

This newcomer to the Havertown dining scene brings creative twists to Mexican classics. In addition to unique snacks and dips (think: guac with goat cheese, jicama salad and tater tots topped with queso), there are some fun tacos to try. The Asian-fusion spicy tuna tacos are drizzled with avocado crema and sesame oil, and the grilled chorizo tacos bring the heat with smoked jalapenos and hot sauce aioli. There’s also a “build your own taco” option that puts you in charge! Grab a seat at the bar for happy hour, or soak up some sunshine on the expansive outdoor patio.

Dos Gringos Mexican Kitchen

Greg Quintiliano opened this popular spot to rave reviews in 2011 and continues to delight customers, thanks to a menu that covers all the bases. Note that tacos are discounted on Tuesdays, along with other Mexican favorites. Really hungry or feeding a crew? Check out the Family Taco Night takeout specials on the regular menu; just remember to order by 6 p.m. We like our tacos gringo-style, with lettuce, pico de gallo and queso fresco, and we always remember to BYOT (“bring your own tequila”) to this BYOB. The housemate margarita mix is not to be missed! Dos Gringos also runs a taco food truck which you can catch at events and locations around Delco, like 2SP Brewing Co. in Aston, and the Tinicum Farmers Market in Essington.

JACO Juice and Taco Bar

Yes, we like tacos for breakfast, and we’re proud of it! The thoughtful menu tempts with tacos for any time of the day, but you’ll find us swooning over housemade corn tortillas with organic scrambled eggs, Monterey and cheddar cheeses, white beans, pico de gallo and avocado. Chase that with fresh juice and an immunity boost, and you have a great start to the day. Pro tip: Swing back for lunch and, most days, dinner!

El Chapulin Mexican Restaurant

Though it may be an unassuming small storefront, El Chapulin delivers big flavors! It definitely falls into the category of “hidden gem.” Authentic dishes abound, so you won’t find any “wacky” tacos here. What you will find are soft corn tortillas loaded with your choice of perfectly cooked protein and topped with cilantro and onion. For more dressed up tacos, try the Tacos Especiales topped with cilantro, onions, and grilled cactus and jalapeño with cucumbers and spring onion on the side. Customers also rave about the burritos, guacamole, fried plantains and churros!
