Beer Here! Delco’s Favorite Beer Gardens
Git yer ice-cold beer … here in Delco! And they’re not your grandma’s brews, either, although you’ll find many old standards along with the latest craft darlings in these beer gardens.
Mild weather in spring, summer and fall means you can turn your attention to outdoor venues, sip beer, nibble bar snacks (and more) and in some cases, play a few yard games or catch the game on big-screen TVs.
Beer gardens are part alfresco dining, part tailgating and all fun. Whether you like to hang during a sunny day or relax as the temps drop a bit in the evening (well, it IS Delco, so the chances of hazy, hot and humid 24/7 are high), consider a local beer garden for your next fair-weather outing.
Media Beer Garden
Spring 2019 marks this busy spot’s second year. The Media Beer Garden is located adjacent to Spasso Italian Grille, right in the heart of downtown. You’ll find 10 beers on tap and 40 others in cans or bottles. Pair those with light fare, wings, mussels, sandwiches, apps and brick-oven pizzas and you’ve got yourself a great afternoon. Media Beer Garden is open from April through September from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday to Thursday, and 4 p.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday. Catch happy hour from 4:30 to 6:30 Monday through Friday. Bonus: This beer garden boasts a full-service bar, too.

Marty Magee’s Irish Pub
Irish pride runs deep at this family-run pub, and that extends to the beer garden and summer stage, too, where you’ll find entertainment — Irish and otherwise — to go with a good brew. Keep an eye on its Facebook events page when you’re looking for a party atmosphere, 17 beers on tap and a solid pub grub. We’re partial to matching our favorite brew with the Sons of Molly grinder, loaded with capicola, pepper ham, pepperoni, provolone cheese, bacon, lettuce and tomato, with a choice of oil or mayo, plus chips. Open seven days a week from noon to 2 a.m.

The Fainting Goat
Keep an eye on “The Goat’s” Facebook page when the weather turns mild each year to see when the beer garden opens. You’ll find ample seating, including comfy couches, Adirondack chairs and a hammock or two, plus yard games aplenty. Twinkling lights create a summer vibe when the sun goes down. Check UNTAPPD for the latest brews and pair them with gastropub goodness. We dig the Ridley tots smothered in shredded short ribs and Rockingham sauce. Open seven days from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m.

Drexelbrook Street Light Bar and Restaurant
Starting mid-June 2019 and every Thursday through September (weather permitting), the new Street Light debuts at the new Holiday Inn & Suites Hotel connected to Drexelbrook’s catering facility. It will be open from 5 to 10 p.m. and feature a built-in outdoor bar with 10 draft selections of local, micro, national and international beers in addition to cans and bottles. We love the full bar and seasonal food menu, too, thanks to returning Drexelbrook alum chef Dave Rankin. Enjoy soft and cushy seating, fire pits, a lush green wall and a large outdoor fireplace with a big-screen TV.

No Delco beer garden roundup would be complete without a nod to Pinocchio’s Restaurant & Beer Garden To Go, the award-winning grandaddy of them all, who was into making craft brews accessible before it was a thing. Instead, in 2009, Pinocchio’s started stocking more than 1,000 craft, domestic and imported bottles and cans to go along with its popular food selections. We love filling a growler or crowler, too, from the 25 rotating taps. Feel free to stay, hang on the covered deck and create your own beer garden vibe. We also know a few people who don’t dig the great outdoors and instead pop inside for a signature pizza like the Greek Goddess — white pizza with feta cheese, Greek olives, tomato, garlic and oregano — or other elevated pub favorites to complement a brew (or other libation). Open Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to midnight. Happy hour is Monday through Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m. — ask about the food and drink specials.
