The Delco Brew Scene is Growing
Craft beer. It’s almost a given now that thirsty beer lovers can get their hands on craft-brewed beer at their favorite distributors, bars and restaurants. We applaud that, but are partial to those that are brewed right here in Delco.
We’ve put together a list of some hometown favorites that you can weave into your own beer tour. Some have had a Delco footprint for some time and are stalwarts in the industry, while others are new to the scene and quickly growing a name for themselves. The best part? All offer classic go-to brews as well as their own special twists to keep your taste buds happy.
Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant
One of 16 locations, Media opened in 2000 and busted open the Delco craft beer craze. Each location offers time-tested favorite signature beers such as Ore House® IPA, Pig Iron® Porter and White Iron® Wit, plus seasonal brews, cans and bottled reserves (we recommend the highly awarded Russian Imperial Stout bottle reserve). Iron Hill boasts a craft kitchen and full bar, too — truly something for everyone at this Delco gem.

A long family history of Irish pub ownership (dating back to the 1940s) fueled Bill Mangan’s interest in opening a brewpub. In 2001, that dream became a reality when he opened McKenzie Brew House, which was named for his mom and is still run by family today. In addition to serving storied craft beers from a full bar, McKenzie offers its own brews. You’ll find amber ale, pale ale, Belgian-style wit, saison and a sessionable light (just 3.2% ABV). Watch for seasonals, including the recent, low-ABV (4.2%) Seasons Change Session IPA. McKenzie’s lunch, Sunday brunch, hoppy hour, dinner and specialty nights menus are not to be missed.

No stranger to awards (he won numerous during his time at Iron Hill and continues the tradition here), brewer Bob Barrar infuses 2SP’s offerings with Delco’s unpretentious passion for solid beer options. Delco Lager, an easy-drinking American amber lager, was an immediate hit, and since its 2015 opening, 2SP’s beer list has expanded to capture almost every style, from pilsners to barrel-aged, IPAs to “weird ones” (as 2SP calls them) — and beyond. Keep an eye on what’s on tap, bookmark the food truck schedule and plan to swing by for an event or two. It’s always a great day in Delco!

This funky-named brewery and restaurant also threw open its doors in 2015. Chef-owner Loïc Barnieu likes pigs and a turn of phrase, and has made Sterling Pig famous for its barbecue as much as its beer. Its house IPA, The Snuffler, is an homage to four impressive hops and incredibly easy drinking. Big Gunz DIPA (8% ABV!) and crisp pilsner Shoat also don’t disappoint. Watch for seasonal brews — brewer Brian McConnell puts “the lipstick on the pig,” and that can mean almost any style of beer.

A brewery with a focus on Belgians? In Aston? That became a reality in 2017, when brewer Chuck McKenna and his wife, Sue, took more than two decades of passion and opened the doors. Get your Belgian fill with Bombs Quad, Anonymous Monk (tripel), Toil And Trubbel (dubbel) and any other number of twists on the style. You’ll also find a nod to what’s trending, too: IPA, saison, sour, even a mead! Grab a bite from a food truck or BYOF, and watch Facebook for events.

Bonus Interesting Finds
Although these two breweries technically don’t brew within Delco, they chose to expand within these borders, and we think that’s worthy of a nod.
Conshohocken Brewing Company took a trip down the Blue Route (that’s Rt. 476 for out-of-towners) and landed in scenic Havertown with its Town Tap. This outpost offers a dozen of its beers, plus a pub grub menu and Sunday brunch. You’ll find the brewery’s core offerings — Puddlers Row ESB, Conshohocken IPA and more — plus seasonals, barrel-aged and an intriguing unfiltered IPA series.

This New Jersey favorite opened its 15-barrel production brewery in 2016, then set sail west to a collaboration with our own Linvilla Orchards. Its beer garden opened May 2019 and pours brews from noon to 9 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday through November. As a nod to its host, select ales will be brewed with Linvilla-grown items. Look for games like cornhole and Jenga Giant, too. Fun fact: Its test lab still resides in Delco’s Wallingford; it opened in 2012.
