Spring & Easter Treats Blooming in Delco

After a few predictable rounds of “fake spring,” the transition from Winter to Spring is finally here! While that might not mean all sunny skies from here on out, we’re more than ready to embrace this season of renewal. Bring on the garden blooms, the Easter egg hunts, and the reinvigorated social calendars!

Restaurants, cafes and bakeries in Delco are also celebrating Spring and Easter with on-theme menu items and specials, weaving in the flavors and colors of the season wherever possible. Like the first flowers pushing their way through the earth, most of these items are fleeting; if any of them catch your eye, don’t delay, as they may be gone before you know it.

Here are just some of the spots to find Spring and Easter treats in Delco:

Hot Cross Buns at Sweets on Darby

This charming, homespun bakery in Havertown has garnered a loyal following over the past two years. Neighbors stop in for adorable cupcakes, tasty donuts, custom cookies and so much more. In addition to its regular menu, Sweets on Darby frequently releases seasonal and holiday treats, like the hot cross buns it’s offering now through Easter Sunday. These traditional British Easter treats are soft, fluffy buns made with a spiced dough and currants or raisins with a “cross” of orange-flavored icing atop each one.

Oh Ryan’s Irish Potatoes

Irish Potato candies might be for St. Patrick’s Day, but these sweet delights can be found in grocery stores and markets in Delco all through Spring. Locals love the Oh Ryan’s brand, which are made right here in Delco in Marcus Hook. Each “potato” is a little truffle made from sweetened coconut and cream cheese, then rolled in cinnamon. Nestled in their green-and-white boxes with the see-through window, these are an iconic part of many Delco families’ Spring celebrations! In fact, Oh Ryan’s reports that it produces and sells nearly 100,000 pounds of Irish Potatoes primarily in the Tri-State Area from January through March each year.

You can find Oh Ryan’s Irish Potatoes at Christopher Chocolates in Newtown Square, as well as bigger retailers like Wawa and Giant Food Stores, throughout Delco.

168 E. Ridge Rd., Marcus Hook; (610) 494-7123.

Irish Potato Donuts at The Keystone Bakery (formerly Traub’s)

The Irish Potato flavor combo is such a fan favorite, that you’ll often find it remixed into other goodies, like cupcakes, ice cream, and at The Keystone Bakery — donuts! Each of these decadent confections is a traditional ring donut with coconut icing and toasted coconut flakes, topped with an Irish Potato candy. They’re only available for a limited time.

Both locations of this old-fashioned sweets shop are stocked and ready for Easter, with classic candy options like jelly beans, chocolate bunnies and Peeps. Also, during this time, The Sugaree rolls out a special ice cream flavor: Easter Swirl. This sweet treat starts with traditional vanilla ice cream which is spun through with fruit flavors and the prettiest pastel colors.
