A day marked by remembrance and appreciation; Veterans Day celebrates the millions of veterans who served in America’s military. Here in Delco, we proudly honor our service members with these special events, memorials, and museums on Veterans Day and year-round.
Media Veterans Day Parade
The Media Veterans Day Parade – which occurs annually at 11:11 am, usually on 11/11 – is widely regarded as the largest in the region — if not the state. Residents and visitors line the streets of Media to celebrate Delaware County’s heroes, in a parade down State Street, followed by a ceremony in front of the Delaware County Courthouse. The parade features groups representing veterans of all eras, military units, civic and youth groups, businesses, and more. Floats, military and vintage vehicles and other special elements add to the spectacle and excitement. It’s a true taste of Americana that also honors our nation’s most selfless citizens.

Delaware County Veterans Memorial
“Lest We Forget” is the theme of the Delaware County Veterans Memorial. Dedicated in 2013, this living-history Memorial preserves the liberties and freedoms afforded to us by those who serve and those who made the ultimate sacrifice. The hallowed ground upon which the Memorial is erected serves not only as a place of solace, but as an education in the founding and the military history of the United States of America. This open-air monument is accessible year round to visitors. Explore the symbolic nature of the site and read quotes from Presidents, Generals, and local service men and women. The Memorial is an inspirational location to reflect on the freedoms we enjoy as a result of the selfless dedication of those that serve country. Guided tours and educational programs are available, as well as casket flag raising ceremonies.

Pennsylvania Veterans Museum
The Pennsylvania Veterans Museum, located in the former armory on Media’s State Street, not only recognizes and honors all those who have made freedom and liberty possible, but also presents lessons on warfare and a living history of soldiers’ experiences so that future generations may learn from their stories. Exhibits depict warfare through presentations, interactive kiosks, and rare archival footage. Throughout the exhibit, guests can view body armor, guns, grenades, knives, mess kits and letters to and from home. And, of course, recognition is given to those citizens of Delaware County who served during the time. Museum will be open on Veterans Day from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM.

Delaware County’s towns, municipalities, and boroughs are also home to several memorials, monuments, parks, and gardens – giving veterans, their families, and supporters a peaceful area to reflect and honor their hometown heroes. Locations throughout Delco include: Aston, Brookhaven, Broomall, Chester, Concord Township, Lansdowne, Lester, Marcus Hook, Ridley Park, Springfield, and Upper Darby.

Delaware County Council is relaunching an enhanced Veterans’ Discount Program. The County will be providing Delaware County Veterans with Photo ID cards that can be presented to participating businesses throughout the county to receive a discount in appreciation for their service to our country. More information for Veterans will be released later this fall.
